PICK UP A CANVAS WITH YOUR COFFEE Oct 19 2005

MANY diners are leaving restaurants and bars with a full stomach and a new painting.

MOST diners expect to leave a restaurant with a lighter wallet and a fuller stomach. These days, however, as is fitting for a designated capital of culture, they might find themselves with an original painting under one arm, as Liverpool restaurant and bar owners catch on to the French custom of selling art works from their walls.

RACHEL McCARTHY

Rachel McCarthy is an artist from the west midlands, who is currently in her third year at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her work is currently influenced by artists like Mark Ryden, Anna Bagayan, Frida Kahlo and Joe Sorren. She also has an unhealthy interest in the discipline of self-portraiture, claiming that by painting canvas upon canvas of her own face she is documenting the changing nature of her personality and it's subsequent impact on her development as an artist. Rachel is also very interested in the more offbeat elements of popular culture, such as the designs of Vivienne Westwood and music like rockabilly, punk, ska and rock n' roll. Childrens toys, comics and books also hold a fascination for Rachel and this is demonstrated in the doll-like figures she often chooses to paint. Rachel will be 21 at the end of October and she has assured us that it is not the case that she just wants her opening night to be a free 21st birthday party. We remain unconvinced, but urge you to come along on the night and see her unique and darkly humorous work anyway.
